It often seems that no matter what we’re doing or how much we are accomplishing, there’s something else that seems better, more inspiring, more exciting, etc. It reminds me of the part in the movie High Fidelity with John Cusack when he’s talking about relationships. He talks about how the “other women” or the “other man” is far more interesting because you only have to know them on a certain level. They serve a certain need. But in the end, if you decided to leave the person you were with for that “other person” that other person would soon annoy you, leave the toilet seat up, and make noises when they chew too.
There have been many times in my business where I have thought going in another direction or trying on something someone else was doing would be a better path than the one I was currently on. And there have been plenty of times when advice from well meaning coaches or consultants sounded much like “you should do such and such - you’d make so much more money or you’d reach so many more people”. I admit I’ve been seduced by more than one of those kinds of comments. But inevitably when I listen to a should from my ego or from someone else, that’s the thing that takes me off track. When I put down the shoulds, I am freer and happier to play my sax, whatever form it happens to take that day.
