Mojo Video Tip: Make It Big Enough

November 18, 2009

One of the things I have noticed when it comes to accomplishing goals or dreams you set for yourself is there is a sweet spot. The sweet spot is somewhere between an incremental step and a monumental leap. Set a goal too small and you won’t have to change too much in your life to make it happen. Set it too big and it becomes far too overwhelming to even try.

Here’s an example.

Let’s say you have consistently been running 20-25 miles a week for years but you’ve never run more than 5 miles at once. Setting your sites on a 10 miler is great but it isn’t going to require you to0 change much. You could do it today without too much trouble with the kind of foundation you have.

On the other hand deciding you’re going to do the Leadville 100 might sound exciting but going from a 5 mile to run consistently to knowing you need to be doing 20+ mile runs consistently may be so huge that you drop out of training a few weeks in. In the end the marathon may be the sweet spot for you. It will require you to change, up-level your training, be more aware of the food and sleep you get and it will most certainly require you to manage your time better. All of these changes over a 3-4 month time frame are realistic and at the same time will likely be solid enough to create a new set point for you.

So, whether you have a goal for your running, your business or anything else in your life, make it big enough so that you have to stretch and make some fundamental changes but not so big that it takes you out and you end up doing nothing.
