Sex and Marketing – The Love Factor

April 23, 2009 | Marketing Strategy

My mom and I used to play this game when we would see someone (or I would date someone:)) who “seemed” to have it all but something was not quite right. So we’d say “take away the hair and the money…would you still be into him”. If the answer was no it usually just meant that the mask was more compelling than the reality. If yes, then he was probably a keeper. It wasn’t that hair and money was all that important to me but it was a way of getting at our blind spots. Sometimes we aren’t aware of what’s getting in our way of making clear assessments – in love or in life – so this was simply a way of clearing some cutter.

Is Your Biz Getting Juicy?

April 20, 2009 | Marketing Strategy

I just finished up at my 2 year old daughter’s FIRST appointment at the dentist. That was one memory that won’t be soon forgotten. Luckily for me she loves brushing her teeth so an entire 45 minutes devoted to her teeth was actually pretty fun. I’m now sitting outside on the Pearl Street Mall enjoying a perfectly sunny day in Boulder and doing what I love most, writing! So, I wanted to post a brief reminder about the FR*EE teleclass I’m offering with my good friend and marketing master Lisa Manyon that’s happening tomorrow, Tuesday April 21st at 11:00am PST.

This is MINE but You Can Borrow It

April 17, 2009 | Marketing Strategy

I don’t know about you but hearing “this is MINE but you can borrow it” doesn’t sound terribly appealing. But this is essentially what many entrepreneurs are doing all day long in their marketing and wondering why the response is not better.

Here’s the deal. A lot of the marketing materials out there include phrases such as: “I did this”, “I created this”, “I made this happen”, putting the person who is offerring the product or service at the front of the story. Sure, you may be talking about something you discovered but the truth is if you really want to sell it you have to make your market know that it’s a secret EVERYONE has access to. By everyone I don’t mean you can’t limit the amount you sell, but your can’t horde a discovery and claim it as yours alone if you want people to buy in.

What Takes You Out?

April 16, 2009 | Success

I was working with a client today when I was reminded of a mantra one of my favorite coaches of all time, Graham White, shared with me. Actually, I think he learned it from Harv Ecker when he was running Peak Potentials. Anyway his mantra became “Don’t let that take you out.”

As entrepreneurs we all have things that take us out. Here are the things that seem to take my clients (and me) “out” most often:

Being Happy for No Reason is a Right Brain Activity: Which Brain Are You Using?

April 16, 2009 | Creativity

The book Happy for No Reason by Marci Shimoff keeps popping up around me and while I haven’t read it, the title certainly catches my eye.

So, when I saw it again the other day on my way to the metaphysical section of Barnes and Noble, I started to make a list of all of the logical REASONS to be happy for no reason.

My list was short. In fact, there was nothing on it. My left brain simply could not get behind the idea. That’s because it’s the part of my brain that loves to reason, loves to offer rational and analytical explanations for things.
